Verkada security for schools, trusts and venues — installed by The Specialist Electrical Group.
SEG engineers working on a site

Michael Simm

Operations Director and co-founder of The Specialist Electrical Group. An electrician by trade, running the group that installs and supports the systems on this site.

Who he is

An electrician who ended up running the company

A time-served electrician who served a four-year apprenticeship at Ardmore Construction, founded his own electrical company in 2010 and co-founded The Specialist Electrical Group in 2018. He has been a director of the company since it was incorporated on 16 July 2018.

SEG grew out of contracting: installation, testing and certification, fire alarm systems, renewables. The security and communications work on this site sits on top of that, and that order matters. Most people selling a school a lockdown platform have never pulled a cable through its ceiling or issued it an EICR. SEG has engineers who have done both, which is why the survey looks at the building rather than at a product list.

He writes publicly about apprenticeships and about doing the job properly and proving it — the same argument that runs through this site’s refusal to overstate what Martyn’s Law currently requires.

Where the buck stops on this site

Named accountability, so you know who to ring and who to hold to it.

The Martyn’s Law position

Every dated statement on this site about what is and is not in force is signed off before it publishes, and re-checked quarterly. The current dated position.

What we will and will not claim

The list of things this site is not allowed to say — that a product delivers compliance, that a platform speaks to pupils, that a duty is in force — is a director-level decision, not a marketing one.

Delivery

The engineers who turn up are SEG’s own, DBS-checked, working to the group’s certification standards. That is an operations job and it is his.

Why it matters here

What the electrical trade teaches you about a new duty

SEGsafe is not a security firm that discovered Martyn’s Law. It is a compliance trade that has watched this film before and recognised the opening scene.

A duty arrives, and the certificate sellers arrive with it

Every safety duty this trade has absorbed — the Electricity at Work Regulations, Part P, the 18th Edition, EICR on rented homes — brought the same wave with it: suppliers selling the piece of paper rather than the safe installation. Martyn’s Law is that pattern arriving in a sector that has not been through it before, and the wave has already started.

2391 is the qualification in proving it

City & Guilds 2391 is inspection and testing — the exam in demonstrating that an installation is safe, not in asserting it. Twenty years of writing certificates that have to survive somebody else checking them is a hard habit to unlearn, and it is the habit this site is written with.

Right first time, because the second time is somebody’s house

Compliance work in social housing is done to a duty someone else set, in other people’s homes, and it is inspected. That is the standard the school work is held to as well: a system you can drill, not a system you can describe.

Raising the floor, not just the ceiling

Michael writes publicly about apprenticeships and about training the next generation to do the job properly. The argument is the same one this site makes to schools — the fix for a bad market is people who know what good looks like, not a better brochure.

Why we put our names on this

This site tells schools that Martyn’s Law is not yet in force, that no product makes anyone compliant with it, and that most of them have no section 6 duty at all. Those are commercially inconvenient things to say. They are easier to trust when you can see who is saying them.
