Notifying the SIA

What the duty will be, the deadlines the regulations already set, and why you cannot do it yet.

First, the correct word

Notification, not registration

‘Registration’ is colloquial, and it usually travels with the incorrect claim that you can do it now.

Section 9 will require a person who becomes, or ceases to be, responsible for qualifying premises to notify the Security Industry Authority by the required time. The same applies to qualifying events, and a further notification is required where information already given stops being accurate.

Section 9 has not commenced. The Notification Requirements Regulations 2026 were made in July 2026 but come into force only when section 9(1) does. The SIA is still building the portal and expects to invite volunteers to test it from early 2027.

So there is nothing to submit today, and nowhere to submit it.

Checked against source on 25 September 2026

Martyn’s Law is not yet in force. This page reflects the position on 25 September 2026 and is reviewed by 24 December 2026. It is general information, not legal advice — see our status page for what has and has not commenced.

The deadlines

Set by the regulations, running from commencement

Worth knowing now, because three months will not feel long across an estate.

Notification deadlines
WhatDeadline
Qualifying premises you are already responsible for at commencementWithin three months of commencement
Becoming responsible after thatThe later of the end of that window, or 28 days from becoming responsible
Qualifying events14 days from commencement, or from the publicity date
Ceasing to be responsible28 days for premises; 14 days for events
Notified information ceasing to be accurate28 days for premises; 14 days for events
Getting ready

What you can settle now

None of it needs a portal, and all of it takes longer than filling in a form.

Who is the responsible person

Obvious for a single site. Not obvious for a trust, a group or a council estate, and a question for your own advisers.

Which premises are in scope

The 200-person test, premises by premises. Across an estate this is the work.

Which tier each one is in

Remembering that education settings are standard tier regardless.

Who will actually do it

Somebody has to hold the list, watch for the date and submit within the window.

This is not legal advice

Everything on this page is general information about the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, taken from legislation.gov.uk and published Home Office, SIA and Department for Education guidance. It is not legal advice and not a substitute for professional security or emergency-planning advice about your own premises. No product or installation can make an organisation compliant with the Act.
